Weather
It is truly amazing how varied the weather can be in the Rocky Mountains, each of the resorts in the Summit County area have very different climates. Copper Mountain is blanketed all year long, with over 300 days of sunshine and 280 inches of snowfall…there is always something very wonderful covering the slopes! The mountain’s physical location, high base elevation of 9,712 feet, and north facing slopes provide for the right climate to produce incredible early season snowfall and superior snow conditions terrain throughout the ski season.

It’s a little cooler at Copper Mountain in many ways. Cool evening temperatures in the 40’s with daytime highs in the 70’s during the summer make the most comfortable of climates for a summer getaway. Summer is short at Copper Mountain….July and August see the most moderate temperatures in the summer with the snow typically starting to fall in late September. January and February tend to be the colder months in the winter. Spring is a splendid time in the mountains; Copper Mountain receives the bulk of its snow in the months of February, March and April. Copper Mountain really outshines all of the other areas in the early season, when the mountain typically has the most terrain in terms of real skiing, than any of the other resorts in the area. The air is always dry, producing the fluffiest of champagne powder and taking the bite out of the colder days.

Altitude
Snuggly tucked into the High Country of Colorado, Copper Mountain starts high above the sea at 9,712 feet and stretches to 12,313 feet above sea level! The high altitude provides Copper Mountain with its wonderful climate and abundant snowfall, but can take its toll on visitors to the area. Since the positives of being in the High Country far outweigh the negatives, care should be taken by all to ensure that your vacation is spent on the mountain and not in the doctor’s office. Negative effects can range from a mild headache to full blown altitude sickness with typical symptoms being flu-like with some nausea. There is no way to tell who will be effected by the altitude and to what extent; symptoms usually go away after a day or two but there are some cases where leaving the area and going to a lower altitude is required.

Below are some tips that should help to make your stay at Copper Mountain more enjoyable:

1. Everyone can and will be effected by the altitude to a certain extent
2. Hydrate! Drink as much water as you can…and then drink some more. Start prior to traveling and drink water heavily throughout your vacation.
3. Do not drink alcohol. O.k., you can drink alcohol if you want, but take it easy. A drink at high altitude will have three times the effect as at sea level. The ill effects on your system will be greatly increased!
4. Take it easy your first day or two and try to get as much sleep as possible.
5. There is less oxygen in the air so your heart and lungs have to work harder and you will feel the effects of things like walking up stairs much more.
6. Eat high carbohydrate foods, bring energy bars and water with you on the mountain.
7. Wear sunscreen and remember to reapply it often, the sun is 40% stronger than at sea level and you will burn quickly.
8. Moderation is the key to an enjoyable ski vacation in the mountains.
