Well Guys, news is that Stratton, VT has raised its daily lift ticket prices to $72 a day. And as news goes this happens to be based on fact. Question is...Is it worth the trip? Well lets look at the statistics? Surrounding area resorts that offer more skiable terrain, better grooming (get more snow since this area is in Southern Vermont), more lifts and more activities for families, singles and non-skiers are charging $62-$64 for a daily lift ticket. Surrounding resorts (weekend/holiday $) such as Okemo (predominatly family oriented) is $64 and has 105 trails, Mount Snow (predominatly single scene) is $61 and has 145 trails and Killington (healthy mix for all) is $64 and has 200 trails. None of these prices take into consideration each of these resorts discount programs for more frequent skiers. Stratton weighs in at a $72 and 90 trails. Oh and Intrawest thanks for the $3 discount for skiing on Sundays and $15 for skiing on Thursdays. Let's face it - those who can afford to ski are there on the weekends since they are working during the week. Strattons website boasts that it was voted No. 1 for lifts and terrain parks in 2002 SKI Readers Resort Survey but truthfully it must have been before they increased there prices. Could Intrawest be trying to build an elitess mountain? Possibly but coming from an individual who has the $$$ to ski where ever they want this would not be the place that I would choose if fore site was 20/20. Shame on you Intra West for thinking that people will pay the price just because you decide to set it. There is nothing about Stratton that sets it apart or above other surrounding area resorts other than the price you pay for a lift ticket. In this readers/skiers opinion you and your family will have a better time someplace else and save some hard earned dollars.

Forget about going to this place on a weekend doubly bad on a holiday weekend. I stood in the gondola line for 45 minutes on MLK weekend 2000. The crowds are a joke and it gives the name Stratton a bad name (no relation). The terrain is very tame, if your looking for challenging terrain in Southern VT, go to magic.

Stratton seems to think it's bigger than it really is. 2,000 feet vertical drop is respectable, but compared to Killington or Whiteface, it's nothing special. It has a wide variety of well-groomed trails, including some with spectacular views (Mike's Way) The lifts don't seem very strategically placed. Most of their lifts are 6-person high speeds, even in the low traffic area on the west side of the mountain. In fact, the west side of Stratton is practically a ghost town. This place does get crowded on weekends, but the lines go fairly fast. The gondola only holds 5-7 people, by the way. My biggest complaint is the price though. $72 for an adult ticket is way too high for a mountain this size. Meanwhile, Killington and Whiteface will only cost you around $60. The food prices are also practically theft. Overall, I have mixed feelings about Stratton. I would only reccomend it if you want to say you skiied every mountain in Vermont. Cheaper alternatives, like Bromley and Magic Mountain are within sight on a clear day.
