Really liked the scenery at Alta, but most of all I was looking forward to the powder. Fortunately there was a foot of new snow the night before, but unfortunately by 11 am it was all tracked up into difficult mashed-potato snow. This would be a better place to go on a weekday, because the weekend crowds were too much for me. Food was OK, but a little over priced for what you get.

I believe that every state should have at least one resort that follows Alta's (utah) and Tao's (new mexico) example of banning snowboarders, because of the fact that snowboarders have no manners, ride dangerously and also scrap the snow off the hills. Let the snobby skiers have one or two mediocre resorts in each state or region where they can congregateand and recall the good old days. I actually started skiing in the 1970s and continued through till the late 1980s... the glory days... before snowboarders existed. As i recall the conditions then could be good, or they could be crap. It all depended on many things (well, we didnt have snowboarders to blame everything on, including our own inabilities). There were plenty of rude skiing jerks that didnt have any manners and skied recklessly and also even the more difficult slopes had these really lame beginners that would do this manuver down the hill called a snowplow. Don't beginners know that a snowplow is used to scrap all the snow off a surface. Not a good word to use when decribing skiing, lets call it a wedge instead. We would never want to admit that skiers actually scrap the snow off the hill too. Does anyone know if Alta tests any further than looking at how many boards you are carrying. What does the staff do if they see somebody snowplowing and not wedging. Can you skip using poles or is it frowned upon (as too new skool). Whats the dress code. Do you have to prove that you are wearing Gore-Tex. Have you ever noticed that after even a diehard skier attempt snowboarding, they dont return to skiing. I hope that the ban lasts forever, or at least a long time. I used to think Alta was everything, but then again i was still in highschool when i went there. If you are stuck in little cottonwood canyon and arent allowed to travel, id say go to snowbird and snowboard. Id never strap on a pair of skis just to go back to Alta, even if i do strap on skis a couple times a year (usually just to shut up my skiing friends who assumed i couldnt ski very well). Alta is a great place to put all the aholes.

Alta is the king of resorts for the die-hard powder hounds. For the real skiers, there aren’t any fancy service hosts at every corner. The skiing is real and the mountain has enough grizzly in it to make the most advanced skier wander into questionable terrain.
