Sunday River Season Snowfall at 15 Feet and Counting

02/28/2008 - Sunday River tallied 13" of new snow overnight taking the Resort's season total to the 15-foot mark. This year the plentiful snow is being put to even greater use as the World's Tallest Snowwoman prepares for a dedication ceremony in Bethel, Maine on Friday, Feb. 29 at 10 a.m. Updated photos and video of the recent snowfall is available at www.sundayriver.com.

"Our 180 inch season snowfall puts us on pace to break the record set in 2001," said Sunday River Communications Manager Alex Kaufman. "Our entire region stands to benefit. I'm sure some folks are tired of shoveling, but snow is what drives the winter economy in the mountains. We couldn't be happier."

A contest to name the snowwoman has produced a winner. The name will be announced on Thursday. The Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce is leading the Snowwoman effort and more information is available at www.bethelmainesnowwoman.com.

While Bethel celebrates the Snowwoman achievement, Sunday River is rounding out the February event calendar with a special Leap Year Party with comedian Bruce Jaques on Friday, Feb. 29 at the Shipyard in the White Cap Lodge.

Other scheduled events that will benefit from this new snow include the USCSA National Championships being held March 3-8. College ski and snowboard teams from all over the nation will head to Sunday River to compete in Alpine, Nordic, freestyle and snowboard events ranging from sprints, giant slalom, skiercross and boardercross, halfpipe and slopestyle on Sunday River?s signature race courses and terrain parks.

The IZSTYLE Winter Tour is also coming to Sunday River on March 15 and 16 and will feature concerts and activities aimed at raising awareness of alternative and renewable energy sources. The tour partners with Reverb and the Reverb Eco-Village which provides a festival-like atmosphere and offers a place for guests to sample all-natural and organic food and test demo equipment from Nordica and Roxy. A music-filled weekend will kick off with a WBOS apres-ski party with the Pat McGee Band on March 15 and continue with a Bud Light Concert featuring Little Feat and opening act Audio Journal, also on March 15.

Easter weekend activities will include kids games, face painting, an Easter egg hunt and appearance by the Easter Bunny. A special Easter morning sunrise service will be held at the top of Barker Mountain.

With over 65 teams already registered, Maine Handicapped Skiing's Annual Ski-A-Thon will take place on March 29. This event raises money for the operating budget of the non-profit organization. The annual Firefighters' Race and Eat-the-Heat Chili Cook-Off, both habitual favorites among guests, are scheduled for March 30, with proceeds also benefiting Maine Handicapped Skiing.

The annual Parrot Head Festival, recently ranked in Skiing Magazine's Top 5 Mountain Fests, will be bumping again this year April 4-6, with Jimmy Buffet cover bands, contests, prizes, parties, and pond skimming.
