Ski Shawnee is much like any other ski area in the Poconos of Pennsylvania. It is crowded and most of the time has lousy conditions. So if you like lift lines that will often be well over 30 minutes long and you like skiing on ice or slush then Shawnee is a great place. Otherwise, not that great. The ski area itself really is not to blame. Located in the Poconos, it is not far from Philadelphia or NYC, so that will bring in crowds of people going there for a day trip. Meaning that the lines will be long and the slopes will be crowded. Shawnee is not a big mountain, it is about average as far as Penna. resorts go. 700 vertical means the runs are very short. And meaning that the trails are packed in close together, making everything very crowded. You will see a lot of people who are skiing down trails well beyond their ability. With so many of them around that makes skiing for anyone of decent ability a pain. Nothing too challenging here, though there are a few runs that are fun. Try Kittittany or Delaware. My two favorites. Another good plus about the trails is that the main beginers are (green circles) are isolated, off to the side of everything else. So that is a big plus. On the main area, there are a few areas where a bunch of trails come together. Such as down at the bottom, in front of the lodge, about 6 trails flow into one wide hill. Imagine the crowds on that one. Being in Penna. they do not get much real snow. So be expecting to ski on all man made stuff, lots of ice, or slush if it is warm enough. It is easy to get to, hence the huge crowds. Coming from NYC, it is right off route 80, about 2 exits after you enter Penna. But the parking is a pain, it is far away from the lodge, making you need to walk a terribly long way with your equipment. Not fun.
