Steep, cold,windy, often icy---yet... it gets under your skin and you just want more. Unique in the East. Ticket prices are up about 40% in the past two years so it's no longer the great value it once was. Quasi-state operated so municipal attitude abounds.

I have skied every mountain with 300 miles of NYC. Whiteface blows every mountain away. The nightlife at other mountains may be better, but if you are looking for pure skiing, this is it. 3400+++ foot verticle, Unreal conditions and a Gondola that whips you up the mountain. The town of Lake Placid is charming and the service at the mountain is second to none. I know its 4 hours out of NY city, but if you can escape for a few days this is the place to go. Great beginner area and an if you think your good, try Skyward and the slides. These runs will let you know how good (or bad) you really are. There are plenty of Lodging options. Whether you want upscale of just a place to crash real cheap, The area will accomadate you.

WhiteFace Mountain is a World Class Ski Resort. It offers trails from beginner to experts. There are multiple lodges with one halfway down the mountain. The view from the top of the Mountain is breathtaking and is also wonderful form the "half way mountain lodge". This mountain offers several lifts and a high-speed gondola. The gondola is enclosed with heat and cushioned seats. The snow most of the year is of a powder nature because the resort closes at 4-5pm so that the snow does not become ice. The price of the lift ticket is actually very inexpensive compared to other world class resorts (about $35). This is also the same mountain that was used in the winter Olympic games of 1932 and 1980. The good will games are also going to use this mountain for several of their events this year. The ski patrol is very kind and helpful. I recommend this resort to all skiers from beginners to experts. It is just a fun mountain to ski on.

Great mountain if there is snow. Often as hard as the granite underneath. For me it is not worth the drive but if you are closer to Whiteface than the big New England mountains it is worth it. Huge vertical but it is 2 lift rides to access it. The service is subpar and the town is unfriendly. On the plus side there are plenty of things to do in lake placid. I think the price is too high for such bad snow.

I've skied just about everywhere else in NY,And a few big mountains in Vermont. But nothing is better than Whiteface in NY.Great terrain, good service, but i wish they had more lifts to spread the crowed around more so the lines aren't as long. But besides that Whiteface is one great ski area!
