Gore would be a hell of a lot better if there were less people like the person above me. I like the lodge the way it is. You don't get chased out for bringing your own food, and you can find a table whenever you want if you know where to look. Other than that, what's a lodge good for anyway? Twister is a great trail for cruising to the base after a long day of actually skiing. Apparently I'm nuts, according to your take on rumor. The woods off to the left of it are better than the trail itself though. The trees up top are good if you know what spots to ski at what time. Ski patrol sucks, but a lot more because they're nazis about everything than because they don't do their jobs. Night skiing ruins snow very quickly. I'm glad there's no more development, although I saw plans for a huge base village, more trails, a golf course, and condos galore over to the right of the ski bowl. That's just one of the million things gore is doing to try to whore itself out to families of jersey idiots, gapers, etc. I give it a 1 out of 5 rating for "family friendly" because it's too family friendly. In general it's a mountain loved by locals but not worth taking a vacation to. Stay away. I apologize if this is kind of choppy and all over the place to read, but treat it as a step by step response to the review above me.

Great intermediate mountain. I have skied Gore for 5 yrs and have been on every trail except Rumors (are you nuts) and Lower Steilhang (lodge located at the very bottom for cleaning pants out - but I will conquer it soon) The pluses: 1. Terrain - great variety of Intermediate & expert trails. You won't be trail bored. You will need more than 2 days to ski the whole mountain. The lower mountain has long green and blue trails, which are great for cruising. I think Twister is the best cruising trail in New York(if it isn't closed) 2. Trails are not crowded even when the parking lot is full. Can't figure it out, but with a crowded parking lot and a crowded lodge you would expect crowded trails, but I never found it so. 3. Great lift system - short lines, longest wait maybe 10 minutes the most at the gondola when the line is long. 4. Great grooming and snow making. I have never had bad skiing conditions at Gore. Early, middle of winter or late - it's always great or good skiing conditions. If it's too cold or icy on top, you just ski the bottom. If it's warm out, ski the bottom in the morning - then the top in the afternoon. I have skied it many times with a snow storm on top and nothing on the bottom. 5. Large outside eating area at main lodge, - needed due to bad lodge conditions. There's also a mid mountain lodge and a warming hut on top. (bathrooms, bathrooms bathrooms). The Negatives: 1. State owned and run - help doesn't care and acts resentful toward skiers. I have also seen some unsafe lift operating by the staff. 2. Ski patrol doesn't enforce ski code - so you have to watch out for aggressive skiers and deal with them yourself. You don't see the code posted on the lifts or trails emphasizing the rules and safe skiing. This is a general problem with New York skiing. 3. The best intermediate trail, Twister, on the mountain is closed most weekends for racing. You would get more for your money if you skied in the middle of the week. I only ski it then. Ski Twister once and you know what I'm talking about. 4. The lodge is crowded and stuffy. We also eat outside because of this, no matter what the weather is. 5. No night skiing. In order to get your money's worth, you have to start at 8:30 am and take a short lunch because skiing ends at 4 pm, even in the spring when it doesn't get dark until 6 to 6:30. Half of the crew is laid-off in March so they don't want to run the the lifts longer. 6. The Adirondacks has a primitive condition restriction for enviromental reasons, so large scale improvements are never done. Overall the terrain and lack of crowds overcomes the negatives. Advanced skiers would be happier with Whiteface Mountain, about 1 hr drive to the north. Gore is a great family mountain.
