I've started skiing here in the last two seasons simply because of the high ticket prices in the tahoe area(ranging around the mid 40's while these folks have kept it at $35 with no discounts). Since the resort itself is the only game in town its used its ticket prices as a means to keep on attracting bay area skiers unlike tahoe where you have many more choices. The area is ideal for folks living in the south bay(san jose, santa clara) allowing for a easier day trip. There is little overnight lodging to speak of onsite so if you want to make a overnight trip you will have to book lodging in one of the small towns. Your best bet would be Arnold on highway 4. The area has a nice mix of terrain for all levels. The advanced terrain is easy to get to and provides a wide open bowl that when it has powder conditions is fantastic. Unlike other ski areas to get to the advanced area you don't have to take a lift you just ski off to the right and follow the black diamond signs. After a big dump they will leave the advanced area ungroomed so the conditions are not all tracked out in a matter of seconds. The beginner area is located right next to the base facilities. The rest of the intermediate and advanced runs are spread out over the upper mountain. Another factor in bear valleys favor is the easy drive. You don't feel like you are doing any mountain driving with regards to tight curvy roads on the way up to bear valley. The gain in elevation is very gradual. The area has all different types of terrain and they don't try to groom the whole mountain after a dump. So for powder skiers this makes for excellent conditions you'll have the chance to ski in powder up to your knees. The only downside to the resort is the lack of seating facilities around lunch time. They have tried to correct this with more outdoor seating space but the best bet is to forgo lunch or eat very early or very late. This resort is good for all types of skier except for the cliff jumpers, but thats not to say there are no great double black diamond runs. if your looking to save some money consider taking the ski bus trips from the bay area
