Ski Butternut is located on the northern slopes of East Mountain State Forest near the village of Great Barrington. Butternut's lifts, trails and base facilities complement a beautiful, natural setting of evergreen and hardwood forests. It is clear that the area's enviable reputation among skiers centers on providing the best possible snow conditions in a pleasing, relaxed atmosphere. Historically, the Berkshires have been a year-round vacation area, and over the years Butternut has become a major focus for those seeking a quality ski vacation. Awarded by SKI Magazine for overall area development, environmental planning and excellence of design, Butternut's beautiful and challenging skiing terrain offers novices to experts alike a rewarding skiing experience.

Novice To Expert, Trails For Everyone Butternut is ideal for beginners and families with children. With 22 trails on 110 skiable acres, it is a great place to learn the basics or perfect your turns. Snowboarders are welcome on all trails, and there is a snowboard park along one side of Cruiser. And two new snowboard parks have been added. For cross-country skiers, you will find 8 kilometers of wooded touring trails. There are 100 professionally trained instructors who will give you personalized instruction. For children 4 to 12, there is a SKIwee program designed to teach kids the basics and how to have fun, too. Skier services include a Children's Center for youngsters 2 to 6, ski rental and repair shop, ski shop and a cafeteria. Although you will not find any base lodging here, a great selection of cozy, charming lodging accommodations, dining selections and apres ski may be found in the general vicinity.

Easy To Find. Ski Butternut is located two miles east of Great Barrington, Mass., on Route 23. From New York, take the Taconic State Parkway north to Claverack/Route 23 exit; Route 23 east. From Albany, take I-90 east to Exit B3; Route 102 to West Stockbridge; Route 41 south to Route 23 east. From Hartford, take Route 44 west to Canaan, Conn.; north on Route 7; east on Route 23. From Springfield, Mass., and points east, take I-90 west to Exit 2; west on Route 102; south on Route 7 to Route 23 east.

Springfield (52 miles) Less than 1 hour

Take I-90 west to exit 2 in Lee, MA; take Route 102 west into Stockbridge. At the Red Lion Inn make a left turn onto Route 7 south; take Route 7 south toward Great Barrington at the third traffic light make a left turn onto Route 23 East; take Route 23 about 1 mile to the entrance sign of Ski Butternut.

When you get off the MA pike you are about 15 minutes from the ski area.

Note: There are a few back road options that offer scenic drives but are difficult to follow. If you like an adventure and want to avoid the pike, check you map then follow route 20 to route 23 or consider route 57 to 23. Not the best options when it's snowing.

Albany (49 miles) Less than 1 hour
I-90 east to exit b3; take Route 102 east to Route 41 in West Stockbridge, MA; take route 41 south to Route 23; take Route 23 east.

Hartford (51 miles) About 1 hour
Route 44 west to Canaan, CT; north on Route 7 to Route 23; take Route 23 east through the town of Great Barrington, 3 miles to the ski area entrance on the right side of the road.

Danbury (66 miles) 1 hour 15 minutes
Route 7 north to Route 23; take Route 23 east, through Great Barrington, 3 miles to the ski area entrance on the right side of the road.

New Haven (83 miles) Less than 1 hour and 45 minutes
34 west to Route 8; take Route 8 north past Naugatuck CT, take Route 44 in Winsted, CT; west on Route 44 to route 7 north into MA, through Great Barrington then take Route 23 east 3 miles to the area.

From NEW YORK CITY

Henry Hudson Parkway to Sawmill River Parkway, or 287E (Choose your best way north.) to 684N;
go 16 miles on Route 684N to Route 22N; (toward Brewster / Pawling);
(FYI it's 35 miles from Amenia Center to Ski Butternut using the directions as outlined below.)

In Amenia, at traffic light go right on Route 343;
go 5 miles to Sharon CT (clocktower);
go left on route 41N at stop sign for 7 miles until road divides;
go left on 41N at the White Hart Inn for 9.2 miles.
On 41N take a right on Berkshire School Road (Large green road sign just before turn says Mt Everett School);
go 3 miles to center of Sheffield, MA;
Turn left at stop sign and police station onto Route 7N
(8 miles on Rte 7 takes you into Great Barrington,
stay on Route 7 through town and across the brown bridge;
veer right at light just past the Sunoco Station onto Route 23 East;
Ski Butternut is less than 2 miles on right!!!

**(Rte 41 is flat with no curves - We consider this the best way...gas stations, restrooms, food, lodging, flat newly surfaced roads, scenic vistas and stately homes along the CT stretch ... fewer deer and a number of our lodging properties.)

From the White Hart Inn - You could take Rte 44 to Canaan but the road is curvy and hilly and just about the same distance.

LONG ISLAND (113 miles from the Whitestone Bridge) 2 & 1//2 to 3 hours.

Hutchinson Parkway to Route 684;
Route 684N to Route 22N; (toward Brewster / Pawling);
