Sunday River Ski Resort
Overview Skiing the Mountain Resort Statistics Lift Statistics Trail Statistics Other Services Contact Info Directions

Sunday River was carved from the mountains: not just from their challenging terrain, but from their spirit, raw beauty and the lively soul of Maine. And like Maine, Sunday River delivers mountains of possibility offering new experiences, new challenges and no attitude: you take it from there. From the top of each of Sunday River's eight interconnected mountains, you enjoy stunning views of the Mahoosuc Mountains and Mount Washington. No matter where your run leads you, one of the 18 lifts - including four high speed detachable quads - will take you right back to the top to enjoy more Sunday River Snow (TM). They wrote the book on snowmaking and have built a reputation by developing the largest and most technically advanced snowmaking system in the industry. Sunday River has invested more than $100 million in improvements and expansion. The growth was largely self-financed through profits from operations and real estate sales. Improvements have included dramatic expansions of the ski area itself. Sunday River stretches nearly three miles from east to west.

Classic New England Sunday River is located near the village of Bethel, Maine, a quintessential New England town of 2,500 year-round residents. A large section of the village center is in the National Historic Register. Classic New England architecture, two-story Victorian homes, white clapboard Capes and tall church steeples, lend a peaceful ambiance to the town. Many of these historic homes are now intimate bed and breakfast inns and elegant restaurants. Many craft and antique shops are also in the area.

  • White Cap: Located at the eastern end of the resort, it contains mostly difficult terrain consisting of steeps and glades. White Heat is a popular expert run and one of the steepest at Sunday River. Obsession is a long intermediate trail full of rolls and variation in pitch.
  • Locke Mountain: The resort's original peak. Features predominantly intermediate trails like Cascades, Monday Mourning and Sunday Punch. The lower section of Locke is also home to a half-pipe and the Rocking Chair terrain park.
  • Barker Mountain: Features a high-speed quad serving a variety of terrain. Three Mile Trail is a beginner run that winds across the mountain. Ecstasy and Right Stuff are other popular trails. Monday Mourning and the race arena parallel it host a variety of high school- and middle school-level alpine ski races.
  • Spruce Peak: Contains two intermediate trails, Risky Business and American Express, the former of which has a terrain park. Downdraft is a short and steep difficult run that often contains moguls, or is iced over. The peak also offers quick access to the western side of the resort with the beginner trail Sirius.
  • North Peak: Has the mid-mountain Peak Lodge that offers food and beverages. Also contains a high-speed quad that services beginner and intermediate terrain. North Peak is oriented toward "family" skiing.
  • Aurora Peak: A mix of intermediate and difficult trails serviced by a quad chairlift. There is also a double chairlift that connects Aurora to the base of Jordan Bowl.
  • OZ: A unique bowl with difficult and expert terrain. Runs are a mix of glades and open trails that emphasize natural terrain features and steep pitches.
  • Jordan Bowl: Contains a mix of terrain that covers all ability levels. The Jordan Grand Resort Hotel is located off the beginner trail Lollapalooza. Other runs include Rogue Angel and Excalibur.

How to get here from there.

Sunday River is easily accessible from all major eastern metropolitan areas, as well as from the Portland International Jetport in Portland, Maine and Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts.

PLEASE NOTE - CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

The Maine Turnpike recently completed its 2004 Maine Interstate Redesignation. As a result, the Maine Turnpike is now designated as I-95 for its entire length. The I-495 designation for the turnpike north of South Portland is now longer used, but will be continue to be found on outdated maps. Additionally, the numbering system for exits has changed to label exits by mileage rather than in numerical order. The exit for Sunday River / Route 26 in Gray, Maine has changed from Exit 11 to Exit 63. You can find additional information and details on the Maine Turnpike's web site.

Last summer the Maine Department of Transportation began a series of improvements to Route 26. A new section has been added between New Glouster and Poland which makes the trip faster and smoother, and a number of additional improvements are planned for the next two years.
