Our family visited Durango in December (from S. Texas) and are trying to get back in March for a week and I can't believe the negative posts from some people. I guess you get what you give in life. We loved it. All the staff from our check-in at our condo at the village, the boys at the rental shop to our instructors were super nice and helpful. My youngest son took a group lesson and ended up with only two in the class for two days. His instructor was wonderful with him and now he's hooked and isn't that the point? We snowmobiled one whole day and it was absolutely beautiful, even my 70 year old father-in-law loved it. We were too tired to try to do anything at night but our condo overlooked the village so just sitting on our deck watching everyone was fun enough for us. If you are looking for a good time, you'll have one, if you're a stooge, stay home, less people to dodge.

About 25 miles north of Durango, this resort has tons of sun. It's a place where sunglasses are as necessary as your skis or snowboard. Though its official name is Durango Mountain, everyone around here calls it Purgatory. Under the sun, you'll think you're in the high Alps… no need for heavy woolens here. It's pretty big with about 11 chairlifts and 2,000 feet of vertical and a small mall-like village at the base. Purgatory's snow is on the firm side, and the area has no vast wide spaces; but it does have a wide variety of runs, including a good one called Paul's Park. There's also Poet's Glade, which is steeper than Paul's Park. I would definitely recommend that one to more advanced skiers. The other good (ego-boosting) runs are Chet's, Sally's, and Vincent's runs. Even though snow conditions weren't all that great, the experience was still worthwhile. Locals predominate in the area with their patched ski jackets. This is not a place for the yuppies of the world.

Beautiful weather, great scenery, uncrowded and reasonably priced-the only thing lacking here is terrain for the expert skier. If you're like me, however, and prefer long, open cruisers and no lift lines Purgatory remains an undiscovered jewel.
